Frequent Questions & How to Measure

How much mulch do I need?

In order to determine the amount of mulch needed, you must first measure the areas length x width to get the total square feet. One cubic yard of mulch will cover 100 square feet at approximately 3 inches deep. We recommend applying mulch 2-3″ deep. Mulch purchased by the bag will take 13.5 bags (2 cubic foot each) to equal one cubic yard.

A standard size pickup truck will hold between 2-3 cubic yards of mulch. A smaller pickup truck (ie Ford Ranger, Chevy S10 or Dodge Dakota) will generally hold one cubic yard.

What is the difference between practical mulch and decorative mulch?

This is a personal preference. Practical mulch (hardwood or living) will need to be replaced each year because it breaks down more quickly. Decorative mulch lasts longer due to its coarse texture and it’s color will not fade as quickly.

Why do some mulches have a bad odor?

It is very imporatnt to know what is in the mulch you purchased. Please ask us! Some suppliers add fillers such as dirt, yard waste and debris to their mulch. These materials will sour and cause the mulch to have an unpleasant smell. All mulches need a period of aging.

What happens if I use too much mulch?

Mulch applied deeper than 3″ can cause root damage and mold. Over mulching will not allow proper drainage of water and is harmful to plants and trees. Don’t over mulch.

Do I need to mulch every year?

Most people mulch annually, however, it is a personal preference. Some of our customers mulch in both the spring and fall.

What is the best way to much around trees?

Alway remember mulch rings, not mulch muffins. When you mulch around a tree, apply it in a ring without covering the tree trunk. A mulch ring allows water to pool around the trunk and drain to the roots. Mulch touching the tree trunk can cause roots to grow toward the soil’s surface.

What is the difference between using mulch verses decorative gravel?

Mulch will need to be replaced each year. Decorative gravel will last much longer-up to 5 years. Mulch helps to enrich the soil over time.

Can mulch prevent all weeds?

No, mulch alone cannot prevent weeds. Apply products such as Treflan, which is the commercially available ingredient in products such as Preen, before mulching. We have 3 different strengths available in 10 lb, 40 lb, and 50 lb bags. Another option we offer is landscape fabric which is placed underneath the mulch and provided an additional barrier to fight off weeds.

Can mulch prevent bugs?

We are unaware of any mulch product that is specially treated to prevent insects or termites.
